Modern Design Auction

With the Modern Design auction this Wednesday we thought we would ask our senior valuer James Bassam to tell us about a special lot he has in the sale...

"I don’t know if other auction sale organisers feel this but for me, when compiling the Modern Design sale, it feels like all the lots are mine, albeit for a few weeks before they go off to their new homes. If I am lucky, something may come home with me and as a collector of studio ceramics, I would love it to be the John Maltby Butterfly wall plaque we have in the March sale.

Sadly, John passed away in December last year, a ceramic artist who will be greatly missed and although some would say was quite prolific, his work has always been very popular. This piece is a little different from his usual figures of warriors and Royalty but I think it will prove just as popular. What better way to showcase both spring and the start of us breaking out of the lockdown restrictions we currently endure than with a symbolic Butterfly. "
